State Of Alabama v. Judith Ann Neelley Circuit Court Of Dekalb County, Alabama, April

18, 1983

Facts

The body of 13-year-old Lisa was found in a gorge. She was a resident of a home for neglected children. She was abducted by D and shot in the back and thrown in the canyon. D abducted the girl for the purpose of making them available to her husband, Alvin for sex with him. Several days immediately prior to the abduction D and Alvin hunted for victims. When Alvin would see one that he liked, D would drive by and invite the girl to go riding with her. Numerous girls refused the invitation, but her first successful pickup was Lisa. D took the girl to a motel and tried to persuade her to have sex with Alvin, but when Lisa resisted, D threatened to kill her. For the next few days, while traveling with D, Lisa was beaten and forced to have sex with Alvin, and while not having sex she was handcuffed. Eventually, they took the girl to the canyon and told her they would give her a shot and she would go to sleep, and they would be gone. However, D injected her with drain cleaner six times, and when she did not die, D marched her to the rim of the canyon and shot her in the back after she pled for her life. D testified that Alvin was present at the canyon, but in a pretrial statement she stated that Alvin was not present. D later picked up a couple, shot the man in the back and left him for dead and took the wife, Janice, to the hotel for Alvin to have sex with. The man survived. The next day, D killed Janice. D testified that Alvin was present when she shot the husband and killed the wife. This was contradicted by the out of court statements she made immediately upon her arrest. The day before her arrest, D picked up another woman, but she was saved when D was picked up on a bad check charge for which she herself set in motion by informing her mother to call authorities as to where to find her. D was found guilty and this was the sentencing hearing to determine aggravating circumstances.
