South Staffordshire Water Co. v. Sharman [

1896] 2 Q.B. 44 (1896)

Facts

Sharman (D) was hired by South Staffordshire Water Company (P) to clean out a pool located on P's land. While he was doing the work, D found two gold rings in the mud at the bottom of the pool. P demanded the rings, but D refused to deliver them, instead turning them over to the police so they might find the true owner. The police were unable to find the true owner and returned the rings to D. P again demanded them, and D refused to deliver. P sued to recover the rings. The court found in D's favor. P appeals.
