W and David (H) married on December 28, 1996, and three children were born during their marriage. H earned an annual six-figure salary plus bonuses, provided the primary financial support for the family throughout the marriage while W took care of the household and the children. W attended nursing school and incurred approximately $40,000 in student-loan debt. W received her nursing degree shortly before the marriage ended and secured employment with an annual salary of $58,000. H moved out of the marital home during May 2010. Shortly afterward, W's boyfriend moved into the home with his two children. On May 17, 2011, H filed a complaint for divorce. The parties were unable to agree on the allocation of the student-loan debt as well as whether the children should be allowed to have contact with the paternal grandfather. The trial court allocated the student-loan debt solely to W, without any offset in the overall division of property and debts. W appealed.
