People Ex Rel Hegeman v. Corrigan

195 N.Y. 1, 87 N.E. 792 (1909)

Facts

Corrigan (D) verified, under oath, a statement of loans secured by a pledge of bonds, stock, or other collateral. D affirmed in the state insurance department report that there were none. That statement was false. D was indicted for perjury. At trial, D wanted to claim that he made the false statements to 'escape the importunities of Wall Street.' That testimony was refused. D was convicted. The intermediate court reversed D's conviction. The People (P) appealed.
