Facts

Billy was a firefighter when it was discovered that he had a cyst on his knee. The cyst was removed but he suffered a disabling infection and was awarded retirement benefits of $1,165 per month. During his period of employment with the LA fire department, Billy contributed 11% of his salary to a retirement fund. That amounted to $21,000 total. This was a dispute over whether those disability benefits were marital property.
