H and W were married in September of 1967. The following year, H entered medical school and W began her final year of undergraduate college at UCLA. From 1968 through 1971, H attended medical school. Until 1969, W worked part-time while completing her undergraduate education. After graduation, she obtained a full-time position which she held through 1971. In 1972, H began his internship at Portland, Oregon. H gave up her full-time job to accompany him there. Shortly after the move, she obtained part-time employment. The couple's daughter was born in May of 1974. W ceased work until 1975 when she resumed part-time employment. From 1976 through 1977, she worked full-time. During this period, H completed his residency. They moved back to California. Shortly afterward, they separated. In August 1978, H petitioned for dissolution of the marriage. There were hardly any assets between them. W sought to introduce evidence of the value of H's medical education. The superior court rejected these arguments. The court granted partial summary judgment to the effect that H's education did not constitute community property. W appealed.
