Facts
Harmelin (D) was convicted of possession of 672 grams of cocaine and was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole. D appealed; his sentence was unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment. The sentence was significantly disproportionate to the crime he was convicted of. The Court of Appeals rejected this contention. The Supreme Court granted certiorari.
