Cicenia v. La Gay

357 U.S. 504 (1958)

Facts

Kittuah was killed, and police got information that implicated D and two others. D was requested to come down to the police station in Orange and did so on the advice of his attorney. D was taken to Newark, and when D's family and attorney showed up, they were refused the request by the police to see D. D's attorney repeated the request to see his client at intervals throughout the afternoon and well into the evening but without success. D asked to see his lawyer while he was being questioned. Those requests were also denied. Eventually, by mid-evening, D got to see his lawyer but only after he had made a confession. D was convicted and appealed.
