Braunfeld v. Brown

366 U.S. 599 (1961)

Facts

Ds were of the Orthodox Jewish faith which required that they close their businesses and totally abstain from all manner of work from nightfall Friday until nightfall each Saturday. The Blue Laws further conspired against them in that they could not be open on Sunday as well. They challenged the law contending that the state's law will prohibit the free exercise of their religion and that they will suffer economic loss if they continue to close on Saturday and not being able to reopen on Sunday.
