L.A.M. (D) began a consistent pattern of running away from home during the spring and summer of 1972. Petitions were filed seeking to declare that she was a child in need of supervision. The matters were handled informally, and the petitions were dismissed. A new petition was filed in November 1972. D was declared a child in need of supervision. D was ordered to be detained at a Youth Center. D was released to her parents on December 12, 1972, and one week later, the court was informed that she had run away again. D was detained once again, and when the hearing was held, it was determined, that D should be released to her parents. On March 19, 1973, D was brought before the court and evidence showed that since the last hearing she had essentially been a runaway the entire time. D was placed in a foster home. D was then informed by the court regarding a future violation of court orders and was told in detail about contempt and what would happen if she ran away again. D escaped again and was caught on May 4, 1973. A petition alleging delinquency was filed and D denied the allegations and requested a trial. While on release pending trial, D ran away again. D was caught on March 24, 1974. D was directed to be institutionalized. D appealed.
