Facts

Velma was an adult resident of Mississippi and during the 77-78 school year was a student at Jackson State. She met Carl, and they dated for 7-8 months. Carl was also a student at Jackson state. During that time, they begat Desmond born in 1978. Carl denied paternity and refused to support Desmond. Velma filed a paternity action against Carl demanding support and maintenance. The deputy sheriff of Shelby County, Tennessee personally served Carl in Memphis. Carl denied that he was amenable to personal jurisdiction in Mississippi. The court denied the jurisdiction challenge. The court found for Velma and then ordered Carl to pay for support and maintenance. Carl appealed.
