Facts
After a robbery, Jackson (D) was shot by police and taken to the hospital. D had just shot and killed a police officer. D confessed orally in the hospital and later in writing. At trial, the judge allowed the jury to decide upon the voluntariness of the confession. D was convicted. D petitioned for habeas corpus in federal court, and this was denied. The Supreme Court granted review.
