Edgar (D) was a sales manager for a real estate company. Norma Jean Reid was a telephone solicitor for that company. D refused to sell Reid property because she was a minor. Reid then used an assumed name and then filled out the application and mortgage papers under the name Smith. D assisted Reid in preparing the documents and witnessed the signature. The mortgage was recorded by the county recorder. D was convicted of knowingly causing a false and forged instrument to be recorded. D appealed; Reid had no intent to defraud, there was no forgery, and therefore no false or forged document was filed. The court of appeals reversed the conviction. The State appealed.
