Facts

The will of Francis gave $10,000 in trust to be used for the preparation, and circulation of materials that will create public sentiment that will put an end to Negro slavery. He also gave another $2,000 for the benefit of fugitive slaves who may escape from the slaveholding states. These dispositions were upheld as valid charitable trusts, but while the case was underway, the thirteenth amendment was adopted.
